Why Can’t I Just Calm Down?
You want to relax, but your body still feels on alert. This presentation explores familiar responses to stress and overwhelm, with opportunities to try simple practices at your own pace. It makes room for the realities of chronic illness and the effort it can take to get through an ordinary day.
Participants are invited to:
- Recognize fight, flight, freeze, and fawn as familiar survival responses.
- Notice personal signs of activation, overwhelm, and shutdown.
- Explore grounding, gentle breathing, and other practical regulation tools.
- Consider small ways to support themselves and ask for what they need.
Practices can be adapted or declined. Spiritual reflection can be included when appropriate for your audience and goals.
Who are these sessions for?
Sessions can be adapted for sickle cell and kidney transplant communities, people living with chronic illness, families and caregivers, nonprofits, support groups, wellness programs, and medical professionals seeking a patient perspective. We discuss your audience and goals before agreeing on a session.
Virtual, recorded, and in-person formats
- Live virtual presentations, typically 30–40 minutes, with optional Q&A.
- Interactive workshops tailored to the audience and available time.
- Prerecorded presentations with agreed licensing and usage terms.
- A prerecorded presentation followed by live virtual Q&A.
- Selective in-person engagements, subject to location and availability.
